Live Nation’s Concert Week promotion kicks off next week
The nationwide campaign offers tickets to more than 140 concerts for just $25 a pop, with no additional service charges or other fees. Local concert options include Dierks Bentley, Weezer, Ghost, Foreigner, Alicia Keys, Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, Babymetal, The Beach Boys, and many others. The promotion will run May 10-16.
A new restaurant will open inside of Corktown’s Godfrey Hotel
Hamilton’s will be a tavern-style restaurant that will feature an American menu and occupy the ground floor of The Godfrey Detroit Hotel. Construction on the hotel, which has been ongoing since 2021, will be completed by the summer. The restaurant will open shortly after in the fall.
New Detroit program helps to clean up dangerous trees
The City of Detroit has launched an $8.3 million program to help remove dangerous trees from city neighborhoods. The Dead, Dangerous and Diseased Tree Program will fund tree trimming and removal services on private property at no cost to the resident. $5 million comes from Detroit’s budget surplus and $3.3 million comes from the city’s regular budget.
Hands-free driving bills pass Michigan House
The state House has approved three bills that update Michigan’s anti-texting and driving laws to include any electronic devices. A driver’s first violation of the laws lands them a $100 fine and/or 16 hours of community service, a second offense gets a $250 fine and/or 24 hours of community service, and a third violation requires the driver to take a driver improvement course.
Plans for residential development at Joe Louis Arena location have been unveiled
Detroit-based developer Sterling Group has released its plans for the 25-story riverfront development, which will be the city’s first all-glass residential high-rise with each of the 496 units offering 10-foot floor-to-ceiling windows. Other amenities include an all-season pool, rooftop terrace, sky lounges, and much more.
New Farmington Hills space will uplift minority-owned suburban businesses
Centric Place will feature office space, co-opt working spaces, corporate celebration space, art-centered-events, and business classes for Black- and minority-owned businesses in the Detroit suburbs. It will open on Freedom Road in Farmington Hills on Nov. 18.
New fine dining steakhouse to open in Lexington country club
Emilio’s Prime Steakhouse will open inside of Lakeview Hills country club in June. The new fine-dining restaurant will offer a menu of Italian-inspired eats, including dishes made with a 100-year-old sauce recipe, 200 wines, and more.
Michigan ranks second on list of best states to retire in 2023
Banking and credit website, Bank Locations, looked at 18 metrics including cost of retirement living, quality of life, and access to healthcare in all 50 states to come up with the list. Michigan came in second place above retirement hotspots like Florida and Arizona. Texas came in first.
Michigan needs to find more money to annually fund infrastructure
It costs approximately $9 billion each year to maintain the state’s road system, and Michigan needs to find an extra $4 billion in the budget to make it happen. Higher gas taxes and mileage fees are among the options to add the cash.
A new smoothie and juice concept is coming to Corktown
Summertown Fresh Bar will open in the former location of Imas sometime this May. The menu will include smoothies, fresh fruit and vegetable juices, snacks, desserts, coffee, and a large selection of non-alcoholic drinks. It also offers a “small, curated list” of beer, wine, and sake.
Renovation of Detroit’s Piquette Flats building has begun
Detroit-based developer The Platform has started transforming the historic building in the Milwaukee Junction neighborhood into 161 affordable apartments including 71 studios, 87 one-bedrooms, and three two-bedroom, loft-style apartments. The building will be ready for occupants next summer.
Founders Brewing closes Detroit taproom
Founders made a Facebook post that blamed the closing on slow sales due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since that post, Metro Times received correspondence from attorney Jack Schulz who says that the brewery has received another complaint of racial discrimination. Founders temporarily closed the taproom in 2019 for a similar complaint.
Historic Dairy Cattle Barn is being transformed into transit center
When the project is complete next year, the barn located at the old state fairgrounds will be transformed into a bus terminal that offers eight DDOT bus bays and two SMART Fast bus bays, along with retail space, restaurants, an indoor lobby with waiting area, ticket office, restrooms, and a lounge for transit operators.
The 2023 NFL draft is now complete
