City Bakery Coming to the Fisher Building

This fall, New York City’s renowned City Bakery will call Detroit home with a new outpost inside of the Fisher Building. This will be bakery’s first location outside of its uber-popular NYC and Japan locations.

City Bakery is being brought to the Motor City through a partnership between the bakery and The Platform, a real-estate initiative focused on Detroit’s neighborhoods and buildings.

Sharing a birth year with The Simpsons and the Hubble Space Telescope, the business’ bakers have been kneading dough and making hot chocolate since 1990. None of the senior bakers, including founder Maury Rubin, had professional bakery experience before turning City into an NYC phenomenon.

“When we opened our first location in Union Square, the neighborhood was on the cusp of revival, much like New Center [in Detroit] is today,” Rubin says. “We are especially thrilled to be in the historic Fisher Building. Coming to Detroit in this moment of rejuvenation is special enough, and being able to open in a landmark like the Fisher Building is a gift.”

“Maury saw the amazing things happening and wanted to come to Detroit,” says Dan Austin, spokesman for The Platform. “We’re happy to have them in the mix here in the Fisher.”

The bakery will be located inside the Fisher Arcade and will feature breakfast, lunch, soups, salads, desserts, and catering. It will be open from morning to late afternoon.

City Bakery is known for its ingenuity by being a bakery, coffee and chocolate shop, café, and catering company all wrapped into one business.

“Creativity is the lifeblood of City Bakery, and the creative mood and landscape of Detroit right now is something we want to be a part of,” Rubin says.
