In past years, Buddy’s Pizza and Capuchin Soup Kitchen have come together to host Slice for Life, an annual fundraising event where customers can enjoy endless servings of Detroit-style pizza and salad while giving back to the local nonprofit. But, like many recent events, the benefit has been postponed due to the pandemic.

However, still wanting to give back, the two organizations are partnering to launch another endeavor. On April 26, Buddy’s will donate 20 percent of all its pizza sales to Capuchin. Customers can order dine-in or carryout at any of the chain’s 19 locations — 16 of which are based in metro Detroit — to give back. All pizzas are included in the fundraiser.

“This fundraising day is really special for everyone at Buddy’s Pizza, as it marks 45 years of partnering with the Capuchin Soup Kitchen — a vital organization within our community,” says Wes Pikula, chief brand officer at Buddy’s Pizza, in a press release. “For us, it’s important to not only cultivate new partnerships, but to also create long-lasting, meaningful partnerships…”

Buddy’s officials say their work with Capuchin is the longest standing charitable partnership in the restaurant’s 75-year history. Buddy’s support for Capuchin, which is headquartered in Detroit and serves thousands of individuals and families each day, began in 1976 when the team at the restaurant’s Six Mile and Conant location were looking to give back to the community and unanimously decided to partner with the nonprofit.

Since then, Buddy’s has raised more than $3 million for Capuchin. The funding has supported the nonprofit’s Jefferson House residential substance use disorder treatment and recovery program, the Rosa Parks Children’s and Youth Program, the On the Rise Bakery program for men who are leaving prison, the Capuchin Services Center’s emergency pantry and clothing distribution efforts, and other services. Buddy’s also donates pizzas to Capuchin’s meal sites.

The annual Slice for Life event is scheduled to return in 2022. Those who had tickets for 2020 event can redeem them for next year’s fundraiser.
