Cravings: October 2015

Their stylish menus are enticing enough to attract a loyal clientele of discriminating diners, but no matter how expert they are, restaurant people like to take a break from their own kitchens for a taste of someone else’s cooking.

Michael Metevia, chef/partner at Slows Bar BQ on Michigan Avenue, puts Selden Standard at the top of his list as “my favorite restaurant to open in Detroit over the last couple of years.” He credits chef Andy Hollyday with “a great menu and very smartly prepared food.” A dish he especially likes is the biscuits and gravy on the brunch menu. Supino’s pizza gets his nod as “probably the best pizza the city has ever seen.” The San Gennaro and pepperoni are favorites. Also on his itinerary: Lafayette Coney Island for “three with everything, chili cheese fries, and a Vernor’s. I don’t know if I’ve ever been there in the daylight but that’s 20 years of coney dogs to keep track of.” He is also faithful to Los Galanes. “I used to live in Mexicantown and Los Galanes was always my favorite. There’s other good food in the neighborhood but as far as consistency across the menu and across the years go, I’ll keep returning to Los Galanes.” And rounding out his  list is Bucharest Grill. “I’ve been a Bucharest lover since they opened years ago in the Park Bar. Now that they have a place right down the street from Slows and do delivery I can’t get enough. I dig the whole menu but the chicken shawarma is always my stand by.”
