FIREHOUSE PUB /// The theme is not just decorative. Proprietors Mike Urban, Brian Vogal, and Jeff Smith are all firefighters who got together to open the gastropub/sports bar that offers a menu that goes beyond the expected burgers, pizza, and hot wings. The kitchen also turns out salmon on a cedar plank, St. Louis style dry-rubbed ribs, and some notable mac and cheese in a friendly and convivial atmosphere. An extensive beer list accompanies the fare. 23018 Greater Mack Ave., St. Clair Shores; 586-776-0062. L & D daily. $12
SAPORI /// Salvatore Monteleone established his Italian restaurant last winter, and has already taken over two adjoining storefronts at 26 Mile and Mound roads. And no wonder. Sapori is a Sicilian word for flavors, and the kitchen is based on fresh ingredients and high standards. The menu features what he calls “peasant” salad — potatoes, green beans, red onion, tomatoes, and kalamata olives tossed in house-made balsamic vinaigrette — and an array of pastas including lasagna, gnocchi, seafood risotto, and Sicilian-style ravioli. House-made desserts, including gelato and panna cotta, round out the menu. 6067 26 Mile Rd., Washington Township; 586-786-4674. L Mon.-Fri., D nightly, Br Sun. $18
