Excellence in Journalism Awards

On May 14, Hour Detroit staff and contributors received 5 awards at the 2024 Excellence in Journalism Awards. The ceremony, held annually by the Society of Professional Journalists — Detroit Chapter, honors the outstanding individual contributions of journalists across southeast Michigan, with categories in broadcast, print, and digital.

Here’s a list of the award winners, for work published in 2024; the first three were in the Print Class C category (publications with 50,000 circulation or less); the Open Category included nominees from all print classes.

Community/Local News Reporting: First Place — “Who’s Got the Kids?” (March 2024); Stephanie Steinberg

Judges praised the article as “very readable, timely and helpful” and noted that Steinberg did “extensive research locally and nationally on the child care crisis and then put the human face on the story by including families and working moms faced with the dilemma of taking care of their children.”

Stephanie Steinberg earned first place at the 2025 Excellence in Journalism Awards in Community Reporting for her piece on how gaps in metro Detroit’s childcare programs impact working moms.

Environment Reporting: First Place — “Detroit Underwater” (April 2024); Drew Saunders

Judges noted the story showed “excellent depth and the voices of people affected come through.”

Sports Reporting: First Place “Bless You Boys” (July 2024) — Bill Dow

Judges said Dow’s historical feature on the Detroit Tiger’s 1984 season “relies on deft writing, vivid details, historic context, and updated quotes from fans and players to capture the magical spirit of the Detroit Tigers circa 1984.”

Open Category — Criticism: Second and Fourth Place

In the open category for criticism, our contributing restaurant critic Danny Palumbo finished in second, and associate editor Jack Thomas came in fourth place for restaurant reviews.

Mickey Lyons is nominated for a James Beard Award

Mickey Lyons earned a James Beard Media Award nomination this year.

Mickey Lyons, our drinks columnist who’s been an Hour Detroit contributor since 2015 is getting some well-deserved recognition at this year’s James Beard Media Awards. Last year, she penned a moving piece about the fleeting “third shift” bars in metro Detroit for the national drink-focused publication Punch. This year, it earned her a 2025 James Beard Foundation Journalism Award nomination in the Beverage category, announced May 7. She’s joined by fellow Detroit nominee, Lyndsay C. Green, Detroit Free Press restaurant critic and former Hour Detroit dining editor, whose thoughtful reflection on urban agriculture in Detroit earned a nomination in the Foodways category. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony, which takes place on June 14 at the Columbia College Chicago Student Center.
