On June 22, Bedrock debuted The Belle, an apartment and retail building located on Broadway Street in downtown Detroit. The building, formerly known as Harvard Square Center, has been restored and renovated into 42 apartments and a 7,500-square-foot retail space.
Restored by the Kraemer Design Group with interiors by Pophouse, The Belle offers bespoke details, such as dark quartz countertops, emerald-green cabinetry, pendant lighting, stainless steel appliances, and large functioning windows. Amenities include a community lounge with kitchenette and private office space, bike storage, a package room, an access-controlled lobby, and an overall pet-friendly property.
While completely rejuvenated and restored, The Belle still maintains the charm of the past. Among the restorations are the original Rosso Levanto marble on the first and second floor exteriors and the terra cotta detailing on the façade. Inside, the original plaster ceiling of the lobby was restored and painted in the original 1920s color palette. The marble wainscoting also received a refresh, and original terrazzo floors now run throughout the ground floor.

With a prime location on Broadway Street blocks from Grand Circus Park and Lower Woodward shopping, the Belle offers a great location. Just a short walk from Comerica Park, Ford Field, Campus Martius, and Hart Plaza, residents can look forward to enjoying all downtown Detroit has to offer just outside their doorstep.
Commissioned by Clara Scherer, a prominent Detroit businesswoman, the building first opened for occupancy in May 1926. The building was originally designed by George Mason — of Belle Isle Aquarium and Masonic Temple architectural fame —and was originally used as offices, known as the Broadway Exchange Building. Now, 100 years later Bedrock is ready to welcome a new wave of residents into the building.
Bedrock celebrated the grand opening with community stakeholders, project partners, and public officials for a ceremonial ribbon cutting. Attendees included Senior Vice President of Development at Bedrock Jonathan Mueller, Senior Vice President of Community Planning and Development Readiness at Michigan Economic Development Corporation Michele Wildman, District 5 Detroit City Council Member Renata Miller, and Principal at Kraemer Design Group Brian Rebain.
