Every year, Hour Detroit publishes a list of the Top Doctors in metro Detroit. This year’s list contains more than 1,000 physicians in 97 specialties — all nominated by their peers. With so many doctors at our fingertips we’d be remiss not to share some of their insights with you. Below is one of the eight interviews with a 2026 Top Doctor.
How can a friend or family member best support someone who is undergoing inpatient rehabilitation?
We love to see family and friends visiting our patients; being physically there to support them is important. For close family members, identifying ways to encourage them helps with the healing process. In addition, coordinating how family and friends can arrange post-inpatient rehabilitation needs can help alleviate any fear or anxiety the patient may have about going home.
What is your favorite part of your job and why?
Interaction with patients is [my] favorite part of working in PM&R. There is such a variety, from working with patients in-clinic, doing injections to help with pain and movement, performing EMGs [electromyography] to test muscles and the nerves that control them, [and] working with state-of-the-art equipment like the exoskeleton, which can help people with paralysis learn to walk again, and virtual reality to assist stroke patients with recovery. It is truly satisfying to use our knowledge and expertise to help patients work toward goals, seeing them go on to next steps in their healing process. Whether that’s going home or to an inpatient rehab facility, we provide them with the tools they need — including any medical equipment that can help support them.
